Fisherman
By Amy McKnight

There was a man you know
He walked upon the shore
His hut, his home nearby
Built well above the tide

He’d fish from cliffs up high
Watching where the fishes hide
Take only what he’d eat
And set the others free

He lost his coat in the rain
And one by one his shoes the same
He was so lonely on his own
His thoughts muddied by his pain
Her image muddy in his brain

Salt, salt, salt will rust your bones
It’s been many years since he found her body on the sand
And it won’t, won’t won’t be something he can easily leave behind

He followed his bait in
Dove underwater then
Looked around to see
The fishes he’d set free
Come swim below said they, let’s go deep and far away
Darkness closed around him and the current rocked him gently
